Service-Learning is a method of teaching, facilitating, reflecting and learning that brings together the academic discipline in a classroom and a meaningful service that occurs through youth engagement in social communities.
The purpose of Service-Learning in Republic Polytechnic (RP) is to encourage students to step out of their comfort zones and maximise their learning journeys through the reciprocal relationships formed with the various partners and beneficiaries. RP hopes to nurture students to become passionate and compassionate citizens who will continue to serve the community even after they have graduated.
In RP, we also believe in priming the students for their service-learning projects through a service-learning workshop. The workshop aims to increase awareness of basic concepts of service-learning for the students to enhance their learning from the projects. For International Service Learning Projects (ISLPs), students will also go through a 2D1N Pre-ISLP Training Camp before they embark on their expedition overseas.
Reflection is an integral part of the experiential learning cycle and of RP’s service-learning projects. The staff facilitator and student leaders hold reflection sessions throughout the project. Students also work on individual and team journals and hold sharing sessions after their projects to share about their experiences.
